I don’t know about you, but for me, the lack of guns in Horizon: Zero Dawn has been refreshing. However, according to Game Director Mathijs de Jonge, the absence of them, wasn’t always the case for Guerrilla Game’s smash hit.
In a Twitter exchange with a fan, de Jonge reveals that early in its development, Horizon: Zero Dawn in fact did have some guns, but they were replaced “as they didn’t feel right for the game.”
@vipmaniacs early on in development we had some in, but soon replaced them as they didn't feel right for the game.

What de Jonge exactly means by “some guns” isn’t clear, as the Game Director didn’t further elaborate on what this looked like before being cut out. He did however, provide some interesting statistics for the game; revealing that for the first week players killed more than 20 million turkeys, 1.4 million Thunderjaws, and 152 million Watchers. The salient statistic, how many punk-ass rabbits players have been killed, was not revealed.
