The first thing I thought when I opened the game was “Oh, this will be one of those”, thinking about the popular horror games that would be based on screamers rather than a genuine horror. As the game progressed, I was caught totally by surprise in my first persecution, after this persecution I felt cornered by the environment and the enemy, I thought they were always chasing me, the music became darker as I progressed and I witness the Horrors of the place, i gotta say Little NIghtmares is extremely brilliant!
The story of Little Nightmares is nothing more than a story of desperation because we find ourselves in the place of little Six, a 9 year old girl who was dragged to the ship called The Maw. All we want is to escape the dangers that lurk inside that place at all costs. The game does not explain much by itself of what is the place and who inhabit it but if you are aware of the events that are happening around you, you might get a solid idea of what’s to come. A comic in the form of prequel came out to explain many of the doubts that this game left us. The first chapter of this comic was to be released on May 3rd.
The predominant gameplay mechanic are the puzzles and riddles that jump out of your sight if you are not really aware of the things going on and the place you are at. Another important aspect that is the cat and mouse mode that is unique to this game. You have to be very conscious about the world around you because there lie the answers you need in order for you to move forward but you also have to be alert about your hunters, because you are nothing more than a simple intruder trying to escape a terrible place. You have to use everything to your advantage and when I say everything, i mean everything. From the shadows to the sound, throw objects to distract your hunters, turn on devices for them to chase or wait for the best time to move without alerting them.
As expected its graphics are pretty good I say and how could they not be using the technology of Unreal Engine 4, but not everything is technology, as they paid close attention to the details, from the animation of our protagonist to the detail In objects that are found in the world, the beds bend under your character’s feet when you climb into it, clouds of dust jump when you land in certain places, books fall off shelves, the steam that moves me through the pipelines. This game graphically speaking is a work of art.
Sound also does justice, the way in which the game mixes graphics with sound is something to admire, because not only graphic art shows you the hostile and strange of the place, but the sounds, from valves, steam coming out under pressure from Pipes, tapping on walls, rodents, among other things will make you see the world of Little Nightmares as what it is, a nightmare.
The Little Nightmares characters in their entirety mute words but not actions leave you mostly a bad taste due to the nature of the place in which they are. But even though they are mute, they make clear their roles in the place and their thinking of you, while some see you as a nuisance or a rat, another sees you as an intruder. Some see you as even food and others as a threat. But no matter how you look, each character is different from the rest.
The game is a small work of art worthy of your time, you will be trapped in a new world and you will feel the impotence that our protagonist feels when moving through the rooms of this inhospitable place. It is a highly recommended game for those looking for small doses of adrenaline or simply looking to hang out. Emphasis on small work of art since the game is quite short for how good it is and leaves you hungry for more, it also has a somewhat unexpected end.
