Metal Gear Survive represents a bold new direction for Konami that will offer gamers a “unique co-op setting” that takes a divergent look at the series using familiar Metal Gear-related themes. Well, if the trailer is any indication, Survive does a pretty terrible job at creating intrigue among the devoted fanbase. The trailer puts a huge focus on several soldiers who apparently get sucked into an “alternate timeline that’s caused by unexplained wormholes in the galaxy.”
I quickly began to understand why Kojima and Konami parted ways, as this upcoming project is such a huge deviation from the original source material. There’s just something about how its executed that feels very alien. And as you can imagine — most fans will be staying fully clear from ever playing this.
Survive looks extremely uninspired and I consider it very insulting that the company is attempting to exploit the franchise in this manner. Why couldn’t they have just focused on creating an original IP, or look into rebooting a different franchise?
Right now, I am finding it very difficult to keep an open mind when it’s clear to me that Survive is really nothing more than a shallow effort. The fact that company is sitting there proudly patting itself on the back clearly shows a great lack of respect and regard for an IP that contributed to its success over the years.
In the end, if Konami truly wanted to win fans back, this was quite possibly the worst way to go about it. The forthcoming release of Survive foreshadows that the Metal Gear legacy is over as we know it.
