I’ve been sold on Horizon Zero Dawn since it first showed up at E3 2 years ago. I love the game’s far future setting where man is no longer the dominant species on the planet and struggles to survive against wild machines. It’s feels primitive but at the same time very futuristic. During the demo, we were shown an interaction between the main protagonist, Aloy, and another human who was being chased by a corrupted machine. From just the dialogue and how they were referring to a larger corrupted machine as a “demon,” it almost seems as if humans in this universe don’t necessarily understand the technology that they’re surrounded by. We know very little of the game’s inner workings thus far but from previous trailers, it seems as though Aloy is an outsider. Personally, I can’t wait to get my hands on the full game to see her discover her place in the world as well as humanity’s place in Horizon Zero Dawn.
The demo at the Sony booth on the other hand was far more limited in scope than what I was hoping for or what we were shown during the presentation. All I could do was run around a very, and I mean very, small area to hunt down a broad horn and ‘Override’ it, hacking its system to make it follow your commands, and eventually mounting and riding it around. That was the whole extent of the demo. Take out the Watchers, which are those raptor like enemies, and capture a mount.
While it was disappointingly short, I can say that the game controls are exquisite. Pulling up the scanner to find weaknesses of the wild machines is fluid and your arsenal of arrows and traps make for a thrilling, white knuckled experience when Watchers are swarming around you. One thing I found out during the demo is that you can ‘Override’ the Watchers as well. You can’t ride it unfortunately but it does follows you around like a pet and helps fend off enraged machines.
The demo may have been too short but just getting my hands on the game to see how the mechanics feel is enough for me to safely say that Horizon Zero Dawn will be one of my most anticipated games of 2017.
